🏛️ The YouTube prankster trial

Happy Saturday! It’s October 7 — people are talking about the “Classified Goons” prankster trial, the “quiet luxury foods” trend, and more.

🏛️ In the news: YouTube prankster trial

The jury acquitted a delivery driver after he shot a YouTube prankster who targeted him in a mall. Did they make the right decision?

🏛️ The Guardian: Alan Colie nonfatally shot the “Classified Goons” YouTube prank channel creator during a prank-gone-wrong inside of a mall near Washington, DC. Colie argued self-defense to the jury and got off.

🏛️ Outkick supported the acquittal: The prankster is lucky to be alive, and was in the wrong. He harassed a man minding his own business to get clicks.

🏛️ Fox News: The prankster's lawyer said her client's behavior might've been in bad taste, but it wasn't threatening. The shooting was unwarranted.

🏛️ But Hot Air thinks this case shouldn’t have gone to trial at all. The prankster’s behavior was totally unsettling and threatening.

🏛️ @s1apsh0es says this acquittal just confirms that the universal hatred of YouTube prank channels runs deep.

đź’Ž Cultural trend: “Quiet luxury” foods

There’s an ongoing debate over which foods can be considered a subtle status symbol, and which foods are just plain gaudy.

💎 Taste Cooking says pistachios are the ultimate “quiet luxury” food — a low-key way to signal wealth and prestige. Pistachios are used in perfumes, and “pistachio” is frequently used to describe green tones in fashion.

đź’Ž @itsneetie agrees: Pistachios are a quiet luxury food. Saffron, oysters, prawns, and olives are as well.

💎 @joannaleachen added more foods to the “quiet luxury” list: mortadella, yuzu, and gooseberries. They're hard to find, but delicious.

💎 But @avocado.dan thinks scarcity isn’t a factor. Quiet luxury foods aren't necessarily inaccessible — they just give off a fancy vibe, like whole carrots.

💎 @tariromakoni says that if quiet luxury isn't your style, you can go for “loud luxury” foods, like caviar and Wagyu steak.
