๐ Should the WNBA lower the rim?
Happy Wednesday! Itโs September 20 โ people are talking about the Canada/India dispute, whether the WNBA should lower the rim, and more.
As always, weโve summarized and organized the different shades of perspective, so you can see the big picture quickly.
๐ In the news: The Canada/India dispute
Canada accused India of killing Canadian national Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who had ties to the Sikh separatist movement. India denies involvement. Whoโs right?
๐ The LA Times covers the fallout: Canada expelled an Indian diplomat in retaliation, and India expelled a Canadian diplomat. Canadian PM Trudeau says thereโs โcredible evidenceโ the Indian government was involved in the murder.
๐ India Today: India denied involvement, called the charges "absurd", and accused Canada of giving space to Sikh separatist terrorists.
๐ The Toronto Sun thinks itโs an outrage, an attack on Canadian sovereignty. Foreign governments can't just assassinate another country's citizens!
๐ But the National Post asks: Are the allegations even credible? Trudeauโs accusation is vague at best. Either way, India/Canada relations are likely toast.
๐ But Bloomberg says the claims actually seem credible. India needs to cooperate with an investigation, instead of just denying the charges.
๐ Cultural trend: Lower the rim for women?
There's a push to lower the rim for women's basketball to allow for more dunks. Is it an exciting prospect, or an offensive idea? Even WNBA players are split.
๐ Forbes supports the idea. It would attract a bigger audience โ fans want to see more dunks. It would lead to better TV deals, and better pay for players.
๐ USA Today: WNBA star Elena Delle Donne agrees โ other sports adjust for women's bodies, and it's not a big deal. And playing above the rim would be fun!
๐ Fansided: But WNBA player Nneka Ogwumike calls the idea "offensive". We need to stop comparing women's hoops to men's, and instead respect the way women play the game.
๐ ESPN says the idea that basketball is all about dunks is out of touch. There are plenty of other jaw-dropping skills that fans love โ just look at Steph Curry.
