  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

Who is Luigi Mangione?

Luigi Mangione is accused of killing the United Healthcare CEO. The BBC describes a handwritten document suggesting Mangione’s anti-corporate motives against the US healthcare system and corporate America.

The NY Post argues that Mangione's motives were even more extreme: He subscribed to left-wing, anti-capitalist beliefs and was found with a ghost gun and a silencer.

The Guardian highlighted something else, though: Mangione’s Ivy League background is attracting substantial media attention.

Either way, ABC says Mangione's legal troubles are escalating as he's charged with weapons and forgery in addition to the murder charge.

Assad out, justice in?

The Assad regime in Syria, led by Bashar al-Assad and previously by his father Hafez al-Assad, has been marked by severe human rights abuses and atrocities over its decades-long rule. Foreign Policy argues that the fall of Assad means he could finally face justice for war crimes, especially after losing head-of-state immunity.

The Guardian agreed: With Assad's regime on the ropes, the mountain of evidence collected could pave the way for war crime trials.

AP News reports that Biden seems to think so, too: He called Assad’s fall “a fundamental act of justice,” but warned of the risks of instability and power vacuums.

For what it's worth, CNN reports that two former high-ranking Syrian intelligence officials have been charged with war crimes -- the action signals the international community is serious about holding Assad's regime accountable.
