It’s Tuesday, May 14 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • The OpenAI protests in San Francisco

  • New backlash over tipping culture

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

The OpenAI protests

On May 13, a dozen protestors outside OpenAI's office in SF called for a pause on AI development. KQED said the protest came in the wake of OpenAI's announcement of a more advanced chatbot.

Time: Similar PauseAI protests sprung up across the globe. They argue tech companies can't be trusted to develop AI safely.

But a Redditor on r/Artificial thinks the protests are futile: “Pausing” AI isn't feasible -- China won't do it. The best protestors can hope for is government regulation.

That’s exactly what the protestors want. Wired says the worldwide PauseAI protestors want to capture eyeballs ahead of the 2024 AI Seoul Summit -- but they're divided on tactics needed for AI safety.

Tipping backlash

The WSJ: The tipping backlash is upon us. Patrons are tired of being expected to supplement wages.

The Guardian agrees. Tipping culture in the US is a guilt-ridden financial burden -- why can't restaurants just pay their workers?

But a Redditor on r/GenZ says they don't mind tipping in most cases. If it goes directly to the worker, that's great.

Another Redditor on r/Barista thinks the hate is misplaced. Service workers don't set up the tip system -- it's not their call!
