The pros and cons of interventions
6 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours
Trump and TikTok
The Guardian: TikTok shut down their app on Jan 19th after the congressional ban kicked it -- but Trump has signaled he wants to delay the ban, giving the app 90 more days to find a non-Chinese buyer.
According to Al Jazeera, this delay is huge -- Trump's executive order gives TikTok more time to negotiate a deal. It's hard to say it's in the interests of national national security though, congress is firmly against having TikTok around. Its data can be hijacked by the Chinese government!
Financial Times thinks this could result in a sale though -- Oracle and Walmart might save the day with a potential partnership!
Bloomberg offers a different view: Legal battles and public pushback played a big role in delaying the TikTok ban -- it's not just Trump's doing!
Thailand to recognize gay marriage
Silklegal: Thailand will become the first Southeast Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage, granting legal rights similar to heterosexual couples.
DJournal: But notably, legal recognition does not include joint adoption rights, which presents challenges for same-sex couples wanting to build families.
Still, Yahoo says the upcoming marriage equality law sparks joy and optimism among Thai same-sex couples -- it's a huge step in the right direction.
The Guardian highlights a photoshoot at Bangkok's Government House, capturing couples' excitement pre-law passage -- good for them!
The debate over interventions
Mayo Clinic: Interventions could help when addiction impacts relationships. Careful planning and professional guidance boost chances of success -- you need to consider the potential reactions from the individual involved.
American Addiction Centers thinks focusing on positivity and support during interventions can amplify their success rate -- it's really helpful to avoid guilt.
On the flip side, this Redditor feels interventions don’t cut it for most addicts. They believe true recovery requires a personal desire to change, and that's not gonna happen from just one conversation.
The Walker Center disagrees -- most interventions can work if the emotional setting and preparation are planned correctly.
This Redditor says it's not enough by itself, but a good intervention can kickstart recovery -- it's really more important to support the person after their intervention.
