It’s Wednesday, June 26 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • Julian Assange’s plea deal

  • San Diego’s yoga crackdown

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

Julian Assange’s plea deal

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, agreed to plead guilty to a single felony count in exchange for his release from a British prison. The NYT says the deal ends his long standoff with the US over his publication of classified info.

A Guardian Op's take: Assange's plea deal is a win for him…but a blow to press freedom. The case could inspire more federal prosecutors to go after members of the press

The Free Press made the case for the DOJ to drop its charges altogether: Assange's prosecution threatens democracy and journalism.

But former VP Mike Pence on X says the plea deal was a mistake: Biden's deal with Assange dishonors troops and is a miscarriage of justice.

For what it's worth, Counterfire celebrated Assange's release: Despite US attempts to prosecute, Assange's release is a win for press freedom.

San Diego’s yoga crackdown

San Diego city officials are limiting outdoor yoga classes. The WSJ says the city's yoga community is not happy: It feels unfairly targeted by these new rules.

The yogis are taking the matter to court. San Diego Union-Tribune reports that yoga instructors sued the city, alleging free speech violations.

On the other hand, a Redditor on r/SanDiego endorsed the crackdown: The city's yoga classes are hogging parking and prime sunset spots. They should need permits!

By the way, blogger Leigh Victoria Fisher is a big fan of beach yoga: It's an irreplaceable joy.
