🎓 Pomona’s arrests

Good morning. This is Shades of the Day, the daily newsletter that summarizes and organizes the different shades of perspective in news and culture so that you can see the big picture quickly.

Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed. The easiest (and most fun!) way to do that is with the Shades mobile app, where this newsletter’s content is pulled from.

It’s Tuesday, April 9 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • Southwest’s engine mishap

  • The arrests on Pomona’s campus

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

✈️ Southwest’s engine mishap

A Southwest flight on a Boeing aircraft had engine drama, although no one was injured.

✈️ Reuters: A Southwest Boeing 737-800's engine cover fell off mid-takeoff. The incident ended without injuries, but the FAA is launching an investigation in response.

✈️ @ImMeme0 on X blamed Boeing for the incident: The company is too focused on DEI to protect the lives of its passengers.

✈️ Barstool Sports says the company will survive, though: Scares aside, we're all too hooked on convenience to ditch Boeing.

✈️ But maybe Boeing isn't at fault for this one? @WilliamJMcGee on X thinks so: The incident was probably a result of Southwest's oversight.

🎓 Pomona’s arrests

Pomona College's arrest of student protesters sparks debate: Crackdown, or safety measure?

🎓 A pro-Palestinian protest at Pomona College ended in the arrest of 20 students. The LA Times said students felt the response was heavy-handed.

🎓 Hot Air applauded Pomona College's firm stance, though: Good on the administration for shutting down unruly protest behavior.

🎓 A Redditor on r/PomonaCollege thought the arrested students should've been prepared. Occupying a building isn't protected speech.

🎓 Still, the Associated Students of Pomona College Executive Council slammed the crackdown: The college's actions are a threat to free speech and safety.
