Peanut the squirrel
Peanut, a pet squirrel in New York, became a social media sensation until authorities seized and euthanized him. Owning wild animals like squirrels is illegal without a license.
Democratandchronicle.com says that Peanut's euthanization sparked public outrage, including a Change.org petition and GoFundMe campaign.
According to NBC News, the main concern is rabies: Peanut was euthanized to be tested, since he bit someone.
Wpdh.com notes that Mark Longo, Peanut’s owner, ran an animal sanctuary. But that didn't exempt Peanut from wildlife laws.
CBS News has more details: Only licensed rehabilitators can keep wild animals like squirrels. If you want to own a squirrel or rehab one, you need to be licensed. But that could take months.
