🕵️‍♂️ The next Bond

Good morning. This is Shades of the Day, the daily newsletter that summarizes and organizes the different shades of perspective in news and culture so that you can see the big picture quickly.

Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed. The easiest (and most fun!) way to do that is with the Shades mobile app, where this newsletter’s content is pulled from.

It’s Thursday, March 21 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • The Supreme Court’s ruling on SB4

  • The rumors on the casting of the next Bond

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

- Jeff (co-founder of Shades)

P.S. You may notice that we’ve updated our branding. We’re preparing to release the biggest-ever update to the Shades mobile app, which includes a new look and feel, plus social community features. If you want to be a beta tester for the new app, email me at [email protected] and I’ll get you access.

🏛️ SCOTUS on SB4

SCOTUS briefly lets Texas enforce SB4, sparking a legal rollercoaster.

🏛️ Fox: SCOTUS briefly gave Texas the greenlight on SB4, a law that allows local police to arrest and deport migrants. But the law went back on hold hours later, thanks to a 5th circuit ruling.

🏛️ Above the Law slammed the initial SCOTUS decision: It enabled an unconstitutional immigration crackdown under a dubious “administrative stay”.

🏛️ But The Right Scoop celebrated: SCOTUS's green light on Texas SB4 is a win for state authority.

🏛️ Reason Magazine offered a different takeaway: Justice Barrett's opinion in the SB4 ruling hints at tighter emergency docket control.

🏛️ Either way, the NYT says Abbott's border battle has been brewing for a while. The SCOTUS ruling scores political points for him despite the legal limbo.

🕵️‍♂️ The next Bond

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is in talks to be the next Bond, but debates on gender and diversity are ongoing.

🕵️‍♂️ Aaron Taylor-Johnson was rumored to be tapped as the next James Bond. Barstool Sports says he's a stellar choice: His past roles prove he's got the chops for 007.

🕵️‍♂️ And The Independent is glad the next Bond isn't a woman: Casting a female James Bond dodges the real issue of creating better female characters in the series.

🕵️‍♂️ But the Guardian notes that Taylor-Johnson has distanced himself from the Bond rumors. Plenty of actors, from Idris Elba to Henry Golding, would make a great pick in his place.

🕵️‍♂️ UnHerd's take: The pick for James Bond carries huge cultural weight. It offers an opportunity for filmmakers to spark important convos about modern masculinity.
