4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours
End of the Gaza pier project
WaPo: The U.S. is ending its troubled humanitarian pier mission to Gaza. The project faced technical and weather-related setbacks from the start, but still resulted in the delivery of about 20 million pounds of food since May.
A Haaretz Op: Biden's $230M floating aid delivery pier was the picture of inefficiency. It's “an apt analogy for the Biden administration's involvement in the war”.
Common Dreams called the pier a failed PR stunt: It did little to stop an Israeli-imposed famine.
A Washington Examiner Op slammed the project for a different reason: Biden's Gaza Pier wasted $320M and aided Hamas.
Still, a Redditor on r/WorldNews wasn't that upset: At least the pier was a good training opportunity -- the military would've used the money anyway.
New York’s shampoo ban
In 2025, New York state will enforce a ban on small shampoo bottles at hotels. NY Post says the move is intended to reduce plastic waste -- Cali and other states have adopted similar cans.
A Redditor on r/NYC supports it: Single-use plastic is a major environmental issue -- great idea to have hotels use less of them.
@MishaFitton on X just found it annoying, though: NY's ban introduces an annoying rule for marginal environmental gains.
For what it's worth, the NYT thinks the ban creates challenges for NY hotel owners: Many are thinking of switching to pump-topped bottles, but worry what customers will think.
