🏛️ In the news: McCarthy gets ousted

Kevin McCarthy was ousted as Speaker of the House on Tuesday — the first such ouster in US history. Was it the right move for the House, and what happens next?

🏛️ The Guardian: Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz led the charge to oust McCarthy with 7 other Republicans, all upset that McCarthy made a deal to prevent a government shutdown. McCarthy will not run for Speaker again.

🏛️ Newt Gingrich said Gaetz should be ashamed — and the House Republican Conference should expel him. He "destroyed the house's ability to govern".

🏛️ The WSJ agreed: This is self-immolation by Republicans. The radical group of 8 has no plan for a new Speaker — they just wanted to sow chaos. And Democrats may regret not saving McCarthy; his replacement may be worse.

🏛️ But New Republic said Democrats won’t regret it. McCarthy got what he deserved — he was a power-hungry opportunist who caved to GOP extremists.

🏛️ The NYT thought the biggest losers were the American people. Why is this Congress so selfishly inept and destructive? We deserve better.

🏀 Cultural trend: Emo Jimmy

Continuing his trend of coming to NBA media day with a one-day new appearance, Miami Heat superstar Jimmy Butler went full emo.

🏀 CNN thought Butler’s ruse was hilarious. He truly went full emo — complete with sloppily painted black nails, beaded bracelets, and straightened hair falling all over his face.

🏀 USA Today said the internet loved it, and listed some of the best nicknames: Ball Out Boy, twenty two pilots, and Heat Wentz.

🏀 Deadspin thought Butler was making a joke about Damian Lillard being traded to the Bucks instead of to the Heat. He’s got a good reason to be sad!

🏀 NY Post: It was just a phase — Butler was back with his usual hair and appearance the next day. It was fun while it lasted!
