It’s Sunday, June 9 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • Trump's conviction has dinged his poll numbers

  • The discovery of a kinky new metal alloy

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

Trump's lead shrinks

The Hill: Trump's lead over Biden narrowed after a New York hush money case conviction -- he's only leading by 1 point now.

Politico: But Trump doesn't care -- he's doubling down on rhetoric, ignoring moderates. He's banking on his base to carry him.

The Guardian: Also, losing his lead may not matter -- Trump is still leading in key swing states like Georgia.

Chuck Todd: But we're in unprecedented territory and should be wary of the polls. They're often way wrong.

WSJ: Weirdly, both Trump and Biden think the verdict is a plus for them -- but in reality, it helps neither. They should just move on.

Kinky new alloy

Berkeley Lab made an exciting announcement: Their scientists discovered a new metal alloy resistant to extreme temperatures. Atomic level kink bands make it possible.

You can read the full paper in Science here.

Popular Mechanics thinks this is incredible -- the applications range from quantum computing to space engineering to nuclear fusion.

Technology Networks: Interestingly, the kink band is actually a defect. But it totally transforms the composition of the alloy, making it tougher.
