❤️ Intermittent fasting and heart health

Good morning. This is Shades of the Day, the daily newsletter that summarizes and organizes the different shades of perspective in news and culture so that you can see the big picture quickly.

Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed. The easiest (and most fun!) way to do that is with the Shades mobile app, where this newsletter’s content is pulled from.

It’s Wednesday, March 20 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • The potential return of woolly mammoths

  • The pros and cons of intermittent fasting

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

- Jeff (co-founder of Shades)

P.S. You may notice that we’ve updated our branding. We’re preparing to release the biggest-ever update to the Shades mobile app, which includes a new look and feel, plus social community features. If you want to be a beta tester for the new app, email me at [email protected] and I’ll get you access.

🦣 The return of woolly mammoths?

Colossal Biosciences is trying to create an elephant-mammoth hybrid.

🦣 The now-extinct woolly mammoth could roam again — if the efforts of Colossal Biosciences bear fruit. CNN says scientists are making major strides in elephant-mammoth hybrid development.

🦣 Newsweek is excited: A woolly mammoth could come as soon as 2028! The quest for de-extinction could boost biodiversity.

🦣 But Vox thinks it's not a good idea: Resurrecting woolly mammoths is unethical and impractical.

🦣 Still, Entrepreneur says Colossal's co-founder transparency is the answer: Staying transparent about risks will help the public hold the company accountable.

❤️ Intermittent fasting and heart health

Is skipping meals a health hack, or a risk to your heart?

❤️ A new study says intermittent fasting increases your risk for heart disease. WaPo thinks it's unclear why — the result surprised the researchers, who thought it would lower the risk.

❤️ Stat News recommends ignoring the study. The heart risks are overblown, and the study's sampling was pretty narrow.

❤️ But MedicalNewsToday says we should listen to it. There's a growing body of research highlighting the benefits and dangers of intermittent fasting — this is just one more piece of the puzzle.

❤️ Forbes notes the upsides of intermittent fasting. It can benefit weight loss and heart health, but requires careful planning to execute correctly.
