🛠️ Gen Z trade workers

Good morning. This is Shades of the Day, the daily newsletter that summarizes and organizes the different shades of perspective in news and culture so that you can see the big picture quickly.

Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed. The easiest (and most fun!) way to do that is with the Shades mobile app, where this newsletter’s content is pulled from.

It’s Tuesday, April 2 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • Israel’s ban of Al Jazeera

  • The rise of Gen Z trade workers

🚫 Israel bans Al Jazeera

Israel's ban on Al Jazeera sparks a debate on press freedom vs. national security.

🚫 PM Netanyahu vowed to shut down Al Jazeera in Israel, citing the outlet's potential to be a “terror channel”. AP News thinks the move could escalate tensions with Qatar.

🚫 The Guardian says the ban was met with outcry. Critics say the move is a blow to press freedom.

🚫 But Israeli legislators defended the move: The new law targets Al Jazeera's “harmful” coverage. It protects Israel's national security.

🚫 By the way, CPJ believes the Israel-Hamas war has been detrimental to journalism. A record number of reporters have been killed.

🛠️ Gen Z trade workers

Will Gen Z be the solution to the trade shortage? Some say yes, they're all in, but others say it's not so clear.

🛠️ WSJ: Many young people are ditching college to become trades workers. And it's a good thing, because we've got a shortage.

🛠️ Forbes agrees. Gen Z is attracted to the trade jobs because of high pay and job security.

🛠️ But Cinergydigital.com isn't so sure. There's still a social stigma around trades — many Gen Zers just aren't interested.

🛠️ And BestColleges notes the drawbacks. Trades offer little career growth — you usually need a college degree to become a manager or owner.
