🤷‍♀️ Do your friends know what you do for a living?

Happy Wednesday! It’s October 11 — people are talking about RFK’s run for president, not knowing what your friend does for work, and more.

As always, we’ve summarized and organized the different shades of perspective, so you can see the big picture quickly. Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed.

🇺🇸 In the news: RFK’s independent bid

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. departed from the Democratic Party and launched a third-party presidential bid. What are the implications for him and other candidates?

🇺🇸 Politico says RFK is a strong candidate. And interestingly, he's likely to hurt Trump more than Biden. RFK’s anti-vax sentiment will appeal to GOP voters more so than Democrats.

🇺🇸 But Newsweek thinks RFK’s bid will hurt Biden's campaign more: A poll found that 25% of likely Democratic voters were planning to support RFK.

🇺🇸 On the other hand, Hot Air believes RFK won’t hurt anyone. He had a better shot as a Democrat. And he needs a lot of support just to land himself on the ballot as a third-party candidate.

🇺🇸 Either way, The Atlantic says RFK’s announcement was a long time coming. He believes that America is ready for a third-party president, but his campaign is a long shot overall.

🤷‍♀️ Cultural trend: What does your friend do?

Lots of people don't know what exactly their friends do for a living. What's behind this phenomenon?

🤷‍♀️ @mad_mitch says one of the “pillars of friendship” is not understanding what your friend does for a living. You may know their title, but not what they do every day!

🤷‍♀️ Stylist thinks the phenomenon is real. It happens because your friends care more about your personal (not professional) interests. People don't talk much about their jobs in casual conversation.

🤷‍♀️ @sweettartesss offers another explanation: People have broad job titles nowadays. “Tech consultant” is more difficult to comprehend than “pastry chef”.

🤷‍♀️ But maybe people should be asking their friends about their jobs. @selfmademillennial says people with hard-to-explain jobs typically have more desirable positions.
