4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours
Chaos in Amsterdam
The NYT: Violence erupted in Amsterdam following a Europa League match between the Dutch team Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Israeli fans were attacked by rioters.
The WSJ: Let’s call this what it was, anti-semitic violence from Amsterdam's Muslim mobs. The city’s leadership refuses to acknowledge the dangers of its large and segregated Muslim communities. They literally hunted down Israeli fans to attack.
Middle East Eye has the very opposite take: the clashes in Amsterdam highlighted Israeli hooligans spreading a culture of violence and racism. The Maccabi fans made anti-Arab chants and desecrated the Palestinian flag.
Foreign Policy: Let’s be clear here. The situation was a violent, anti-semitic attack on Israeli fans. And it’s part of a larger pattern of anti-Jew behavior in the Netherlands.
AP News: The Dutch authorities' take is that the attacks were unacceptable anti-semitic violence. The attacks were organized and on display on social media.
Did the dinosaurs soft exit?
NPR reports says there's a report in PNAs that challenges the idea that dinosaurs were wiped out by a cataclysmic event like a volcano or asteroid impact. New research on fossils found in China are the basis.
NHPR: This is big! Our commonly held notions could be totally upended.
WFDD agrees: The research suggests that it was a gradual ecosystem collapse that spelled the end for these dinosaurs -- and not, as we've believed, a violent volcanic or asteroid event.
While JPost notes that rapid sedimentation and burrow collapses may have helped preserve the fossils. We've been given a vivid picture of their world. What a beautiful gift! And yes, it shows that sedimentation and collapses are the real reason for the dinosaurs' demise.
