It’s Monday, August 5 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • Trump’s desire to debate on Fox

  • The implications of declining birth rates

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

Trump wants Fox for debate

WaPo: Trump backed out of the scheduled ABC presidential debate -- he says he will only debate Harris if it's on Fox with a “full arena audience”.

The Guardian: It's because of Trump's lawsuit with ABC and George Stephanopoulos, an ABC anchor. Trump says the network is unfairly biased against him.

National Review: Plus he likely wants to capitalize on Fox's conservative audience. A debate on Fox could bolster his base

This Redditor says it's much simpler -- Trump doesn't want to actually debate. It'd make him look bad and give Harris a boost.

This Redditor thinks it's sad -- it's like “the kid that threatens to take the ball home unless they change how the game is played.”

Declining birth rates

Pew: Birth rates are declining globally and in the US. In the long term, it could lower tax revenues and increase costs for aging populations.

Population Connection: It's not a problem -- the population is still growing and the economic fears are overblown. Also, declining birth rates often mean positive social changes for women.

Wharton: No, it's definitely a problem -- it will mean fewer workers paying taxes for support programs. Tech is largely to blame, it's making us lonely.

Vox thinks it's complicated -- declining birth rates can be an issue, but the conversation about them is a bit crazy. Children aren't instruments for social goals, they're people!
