🐘 Botswana’s elephants

Good morning. This is Shades of the Day, the daily newsletter that summarizes and organizes the different shades of perspective in news and culture so that you can see the big picture quickly.

Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed. The easiest (and most fun!) way to do that is with the Shades mobile app, where this newsletter’s content is pulled from.

It’s Thursday, April 4 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • The debate over Botswana’s elephants

  • American Airlines’s new pet policy

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

🐘 Botswana’s elephants

Botswana's president said he would ship 20k elephants to Germany over a proposed trophy hunting ban.

🐘 Botswana's President Masisi threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany. It's over a German law that would ban trophy hunting imports.

🐘 BBC: Masisi says elephant hunting is crucial for the economy. Also, elephants do serious damage to rural communities.

🐘 NDTV: Masisi says it's a serious challenge. Germany doesn't understand how dangerous these elephants are — if they want to conserve them, let them do it in their own country.

🐘 The Guardian: But Germany says it has a duty to limit trophy imports. There's an “alarming loss of biological diversity”, and Germany is Europe's #1 importer of hunting trophies.

🐾 American’s pet policy

Traveling with pets? American Airlines says to pack your pet *and* your carry-on.

🐾 American Airlines updated its pet policy! Passengers can bring a pet and a carry-on item in the cabin. A blogger on CBS hopes the policy will cut down on false claims of service dogs.

🐾 Pet Helpful celebrated the change: American's change is sensible, and it makes traveling with your pets a lot easier.

🐾 But a Redditor on r/AmericanAirlines wasn't a fan: AA's new rule does nothing to curb the rise of “fake” service dogs on planes.

🐾 By the way, Travel+Leisure notes that AA's new pet policy is similar to Southwest's: SW never charged pet owners for their carry-on!
