🍷 Boomers & alcohol
Good morning. This is Shades of the Day, the daily newsletter that summarizes and organizes the different shades of perspective in news and culture so that you can see the big picture quickly.
Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed. The easiest (and most fun!) way to do that is with the Shades mobile app, where this newsletter’s content is pulled from.
It’s Saturday, April 6 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

📸 Best eclipse pictures?
Want to snap that perfect eclipse shot? Here are some tips and warnings on capturing the cosmic marvel.
📸 BBC says taking pictures of the eclipse can be dangerous. Use proper filters to protect your camera and eyes.
📸 Newscentermaine.com argues that you don't need any special equipment: Your smartphone is enough!
📸 But fox59.com recommends against that — it could harm your phone. Definitely get a solar filter if you plan on taking pictures.
📸 ABC News reminds us to enjoy the actual event! Pictures are cool, but you have to experience it too.
🍷 Boomers & alcohol
As Boomers age, health risks from alcohol consumption spike — but why are boomers drinking so much?
🍷 The % of older Americans who drink is on the rise. CNN says that's no good — the trend poses significant health risks for baby boomers.
🍷 Psychology Today agreed: Rising alcohol-related deaths signal a public health crisis. We can probably blame the pandemic.
🍷 But the NYT thinks Covid alone doesn't explain the trend: Boomers drink more because of the generation's culture and relationship with alcohol.
🍷 For what it's worth, WHO says it's not just older people who need to be wary: No amount of alcohol is safe. Even light drinking is linked to cancer.
