🇮🇱 In the news: What does anti-Zionism mean?
Is anti-Zionism the same as anti-Semitism, or is it a valid political critique of Israel?
🇮🇱 Britannica: Zionism is a Jewish national movement that strived to create and maintain a Jewish state of Israel in Palestine. It originated in late 19th-century Europe.
🇮🇱 The Jerusalem Post says anti-Zionism is just anti-Semitism in disguise. Anybody who says Israel has no right to exist is a jew hater, plain and simple.
🇮🇱 The WSJ thinks anti-Zionism is actually worse than anti-Semitism because it makes a two-state solution impossible — that’s bad for both Palestinians and Israelis.
🇮🇱 But The Nation disagrees: Zionism is a political philosophy exclusively. Don't conflate it with Judaism — there are a great many Jews who strongly oppose Zionism.
🇮🇱 The Atlantic says some forms of anti-Zionism are also anti-Semitic, but being opposed to a religiously or ethnically defined state isn't. There's nothing wrong with calling for a single-state solution where Palestinians and Jews have equal rights.
🏀 Cultural trend: Bob Knight’s legacy
Famed college basketball coach Bob Knight died at 83. What's his legacy — greatness or scandals?
🏀 ESPN: Bob Knight had a long and storied career coaching college basketball — but he had plenty of scandals along the way. What should his legacy be?
🏀 The NCAA thinks Knight’s greatness should be the focus. Nobody approached the game with as much genius as him. He was a firebrand, but his impact on basketball was legendary.
🏀 But The Indy Star can’t ignore the messed-up things he did. He choked a player at practice, threw a chair during a game, possibly punched a cop, brought a bullwhip to practice and lightly flicked it at a Black player, and said “if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it”.
🏀 Jay Bilas of ESPN says we should celebrate him despite his issues. He was truly one of a kind, and the good outweighed the bad. People are complicated!
