☢️ Biden’s uranium move

Happy Tuesday! It’s August 29 — people are talking about Biden’s national monument declaration, a theater that’s allowing dogs at the movies, and more.

As always, we’ve summarized and organized the different shades of perspective, so you can see the big picture quickly.

☢️ In the news: Biden’s uranium move

Biden limited uranium mining in an area around the Grand Canyon. Is this move a win for the environment, or does it weaken the US’s energy position?

☢️ Newsweek: Biden declared a million acres around the Grand Canyon, land rich in uranium, a national monument. The declaration limits uranium mining.

☢️ The WSJ doesn’t like the move: The US needs uranium for its nuclear reactors, so Biden just made the country more reliant on Russia's uranium.

☢️ The National Review agrees. While uranium mining may get a bad rap, it’s completely safe nowadays. Plus, the move makes the US even more reliant on carbon-producing energy. Biden made the wrong decision.

☢️ But the National Resources Defense Council supports the move: It will protect the land from the detrimental effects of uranium mining. Biden should extend these mining protections to other areas in the American west.

🐶 Cultural trend: Dogs at the movies?

Curzon Cinemas, a chain with 16 locations in the UK, is allowing dogs to attend select movies with their owners — no extra ticket needed. Is this a good idea?

🐶 The NYT explains that this decision is part of a larger program to cater to a wider crowd. The theater is also adding screenings for infants, with lower volume and higher lights. The chain says it's about freedom for their customers.

🐶 A Redditor on r/AMCsAList says it's a terrible idea. What if somebody is allergic? And why would a dog want to sit in a dark, loud room for 2 hours?

🐶 But Budget Travel reminds us that a chain in Texas has already done it successfully. Dogs there are well behaved thanks to tech changes and strict rules — they must be vaccinated and stay on a leash, and there’s an intermission.

🐶 Our Culture Mag says regardless, service dogs must be allowed. But owners should only bring service dogs if they’re well behaved and properly groomed.
