🖱️ A dramatic weekend for Sam Altman & OpenAI

OpenAI (the makers of ChatGPT) suddenly fired their CEO, Sam Altman. Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest investor, then scooped him up. What happened?

🖱️ The Verge’s recap: The OpenAI Board of Directors fired CEO Sam Altman, but then tried to bring him back after an internal revolt. Altman refused and instead joined Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest investor!

🖱️ CNN said OpenAI royally screwed this up. The (nonprofit) board had valid ethical concerns about the speed and recklessness of AI development under Altman, but suddenly firing him was a dumb move.

🖱️ Yahoo Finance thinks this debacle exposes a deep rift in the AI community — one side is deeply fearful of unchecked AI, while the other is excited and wants to give developers free rein.

🖱️ Reuters says it’s unclear if it was the right call, but this is clearly a win for the AI doomer crowd. OpenAI’s new CEO is very cautious about AI's future — he thinks it could destroy us all.

🖱️ WaPo believes that no matter how this all shakes out, Altman has a huge place in AI history.

✈️ Airport pickups: A hassle, or a sweet gesture?

As the holidays approach, the debate over the airport pickup is hot.

✈️ The WSJ begs: Please stop expecting people to pick you up from the airport! it's inconvenient, and just contributes to traffic.

✈️ But a WaPo opinion says picking someone up is a “beautiful act of love”. What's more heartwarming than hugging someone tight at baggage claim?

✈️ And the LA Times thinks the airport pick-up is the grandest of grand gestures — one of the few actions that deserves “thank you so much” in response.

✈️ Still, HuffPo says pickups are a hotly debated topic. But many people can agree that the ethics of an airport pickup depends on the time of your flight.
