It’s Thursday, August 22 — here’s what you’ll find in today’s newsletter:

  • Oprah’s speech at the DNC

  • A German court’s decision on a 99-year-old Nazi

  • 4 quick hits of news from the last 24 hours

Oprah at the DNC

In a surprise move, Oprah Winfrey spoke on night 3 of the DNC in Chicago. The BBC said her speech energized the crowd and urging voters to “choose common sense over nonsense”.

Watch Oprah's speech for yourself here.

Fox News offered a less flattering take on Oprah's speech: She took the opportunity “rail against” Trump -- a “man she once considered running for office with”.

Still, Newsweek said Oprah's speech made a huge impact: One GOP pollster said Oprah's DNC speech was more influential than (the acclaimed) Michelle Obama's.

The 99-year-old Nazi typist

A German court upheld the conviction of a 99-year-old woman for her role as a typist at a Nazi concentration camp. Reuters says she aided in the murder of over 10,000 people.

Al Jazeera: This might be one of the last trials for Nazis -- they're all well into old age.

This Redditor thinks it's a mistake, the expectations on the 99-year-old Nazi typist are unreasonable. She was 18 in a fascist country that had complete control over its people -- she would've endangered her family if she refused to work.

Another Reddit says no way, she was submitting orders for poison gas. She knew what she was doing -- she's definitely complicit.

But this Redditor thinks it's just for show, she wasn't a decider. Instead of convicting her, why not focus on teaching the next generation about the horrors of the Holocaust?

1) The body of tech magnate Mike Lynch was found after his yacht sank off Sicily, with one person still missing.

2) Fed Chair Jerome Powell's upcoming speech is highly awaited as new data suggests a weakening labor market.

3) Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, ex-football coach, fires up DNC with pep talk as he's nominated for vice president.

4) A Greek-flagged oil tanker was attacked and set on fire in the Red Sea, leading to the rescue of its crew.
